Sidelined by an Injury UPDATE

Hey bloggers, I am looking for advice/experiences with recovering from plantar fascitis. I believe I acquired this about a month ago but did not listen to my body and pushed myself training for my upcoming marathon.

I avoid going barefoot, and I lather my feet up with bio freeze before bed. I also try to stretch before exertion, and have been spending my lunch hour in yoga class instead of doing my obligatory 4-5 mile run. The pain is moderate. I wonder if I should be doing more to "cure" it?

If anyone is asking why don't I go to a doctor, the reason is that I called my chiropractor and he's on vacation until next week.

I also read that "older" people are at higher risk for this and was a little depressed about that because I'm extremely active and outdoorsy. I'll be 44 in March and I honestly refuse to give up being active and especially refuse to give up my marathon training which is in 6 more weeks!

Does it really take 6 to 18 months to heal, which is what I read in an article online? Why does it take so long? Is this because staying off our feet isn't really an option for most of us? Would that help anyway? I tell myself that people of any age can get this, although I never did until now, even when I ran 10Ks. Still, it's a reminder that I'm not 24 anymore.

Thanks for any advice you can give me!

I visited my chiropractor yesterday. He happens to also be a runner WITH plantar faciitis. He gave me a B+ for being proactive with getting the inserts and buying orthotics to wear.

I had my first low level laser treatment on my heel. Apparently low level lasers can help to mend microtears in torn tendons by fusing them. I am going to continue seeing him for the next month to get the laser treatments.

I am happy to report that I am back to running short runs (3-6) miles. I may not be able to do the marathon and I'm okay with that, There will always be others.

Thanks to everyone for their outpouring of support. It means a lot to me.

xoxo,
Myelin

As someone who's spent years working on my feet, I've gone a few rounds with that demon. As it connects the heal to the rest of the foot/toes you are right in that you can't really stay off it. The only real options are to slow down on the running, as you clearly have overworked that connective tissue, OR, see if there isn't a shoe insert that would better distribute the abuse you put your poor feet into.

Absolute worst case, it could be a bone spur that has developed, but you'd need to see the Dr. about that one. Thankfully mine usually relaxed after about a month of taking it easier and a new set of shoes. 6-18 months seems a bit far fetched, unless there is something seriously wrong.

I'm going insert shopping tomorrow. Hopefully, I can find a good set of arch supports that give my heel some relief on my runs!

That really sucks. I was looking forward to hearing about how your marathon went. I guess I'm assuming that this affliction will put you "out of the running". Keep us posted. Sending good thoughts.

I'm not giving up on my marathon. I will work through my injury and I'm confident I can do it in 6 weeks.

Not sure it would help your foot but there's only 1350 miles between your foot and a good massage

Anyway, there are pressure points on the outer edge and top of our feet, around the inside ankle and up the inner calf. One of these might help. You'll know it when you're on the point by the localized pain on the point that radiates and tingles to other parts.

I suffered from a bad case a few years ago and the only thing that helped was staying off the foot AND more to the point, I wore a 'boot' for about 2-3 weeks which kept the foot pretty imobile. I hate to be the bearer of bad news but that boot was the only thing that really did help.... Good luck -tm

lots of good advice above. Sadly, PF can take 6 months or longer to fully heal
have you tried using a tennis ball to massage the bottoms of your feet? Put the ball on the floor, and roll your foot back and forth, putting as much pressure on it as you can bear. you can also do this with a frozen water bottle (partially full of water)

I saw stretching mentioned, do both gastroc AND soleous stretches!
