Virtual Symposium On “Inspiration (what inspires us to)”: Swing Club Comes To God, Dodges Zoning Law

This blog entry is part of the seventh virtual symposium, an informal collection of bloggers who – purely for the hell of it – voted on a single topic (“Inspiration (what inspires us to”)) and agreed, on or about April 26, to post their interpretations of that topic. A continually updated list of participants can be found here: Participants List for The Seventh Virtual Symposium Inspiration What Inspires Us To

The glory of this present house will be greater than the glory of the former house, says the Lord Almighty. And in this place I will grant peace, declares the Lord Almighty. – Haggai 2:9

Religion has inspired both glorious and, paradoxically, profane thoughts and actions. It has been the motivation for the saintly, and the refuge for scoundrels. Readers will have to determine which category The United Fellowship Center (UFC) falls into: The organization is essentially a front for The Social Club, a swingers organization based in Nashville, Tenn.

The Social Club had been denied permission to open an outpost in Madison, Tenn. Both city and state officials scrambled to change zoning laws once The Social Club announced its plans. In response, The Social Club got religion: As the headline of an article in The Tennessean notes, “Madison swingers club to open as church instead.”

Under the name Freedom 4 All, Inc. the organization gained approval for a work permit, according to “Tennessee swingers club to open as church after zoning issues“, an article in The New York Daily News. But as the Tennessean notes, “The Floor plans for the club, and now for the church, show the same room layout with several label changes. The club's themed ‘dungeon’ room will now be for the ‘choir.’ A dressing room has become the sacristy.”

The Daily News adds that on the plans a “game room” has become a “fellowship hall.”

If The United Fellowship Center opens, it will be an off-premises club, one where people meet and interact, but play elsewhere. As an attorney for The UFC told The Tennessean, "I assume if someone meets there and wants to do something of a sexual nature, they'll go to a hotel or a motel or go home."

Indeed, much like other churches – or most other businesses.

On the Institute of Religious Freedom website, the home page proclaims the organization offers “Meeting Every Weekend with other Open and Broadminded Men, Women and Couples” and that “we believe our fellowship is just as valid a form of worship as the weekly services held in some of the world’s more segregated and elitist religious institutions.” Is this organization linked to the Madison club? While there is no specific reference to The Social Club or The United Fellowship Center, the organization’s email address incorporates the physical address of the proposed club.

The fight’s not over yet: According to The Tennessean, councilwoman Karen Bennett, who has been spearheading the fight against The Social Club, has introduced a second proposal designed at keeping sex clubs within industrial areas only.

Bennett also told The Tennessean that the club’s foes will monitor the renovation process and that they have an interest in “checking out the church when it opens.”

Her words, not mine.

Amen.

Heh... it ain't open yet, and it is going to be, um, off-premises devotionals only... but yeah, if one must observe the sabbath, one could do worse...

Still, yes, it would be fun to attend a service or two... hey! Maybe we have the location for the first symposium meetup!*

*No such event is being planned. But it would be fun, wouldn't it? What do you think, folks -- church, library, or mattress store?

There is a church in Manhattan (which I won't identify here) that offers folding beds in the foyer for any and all who need one. Books optional.

Where I live, the council doesn't allow any sex clubs to operate. I have to drive 20 miles to the nearest one.

Fun story! This incident was mentioned in a post by another blogger here this week.
I couldn't resist taking a look at Councilwoman Karen Bennett after reading your post. She plans to check out the church, so I checked her out. This has been a weekend for me to check out women who don't appreciate me taking a closer- or a longer- look. My evaluation may seem unkind, but I can assure you it is offered in the Christian spirit of charity and love for all: She appears to me to be a woman who might benefit from a mcmaniac victory in the coming presidential election, i.e., I do believe she could use some Orgasms and Weed. She looks a bit tense. Those meth crystal blue eyes need to relax a little. Come on in, take her shoes and set a spell. Whistle herself a skin flute or two.

Its funky that a little bit of white out painted over some words can change peoples perceived intentions. Thank you for this eye opening post!

Great read! Those state and local representatives have done a wonderful job for their constituents. The club will open just the same and will now operate tax free! While talking to a sex club owner here I discovered a little known law, the owner or "host" is not allowed to engage in any sexual activity because of the monetary exchange, that would be considered prostitution.
Very interesting law... I wonder if it is state-by-state (as I suspect) or federal?

And... okay, so the owner and/or host can't participate, but what about staff workers, who would be more likely to be in positions where they could be unwillingly coerced?

Final question: If this church gets off the ground, and is funded by tithes, does the lack of mandatory payment mean that the clergy can play with abandon? In which case why doesn't every swing club reincorporate as a church, temple, or mosque?

If it were a swinging church, you'd be able to deduct the cost of your gas and your post-play Arby's meal.*

*I'm not 100 percent sure about this. Actually, I'm not a tax attorney or even an accountant. I'm probably making it up. Even so, wouldn't it be a lovely conversation to have when being audited?

Okay, we DEFINITELY need to plan a blogger meet 'n' greet at this church. And we can descend on Councilwoman Bennett's office en masse and offer an intervention. Hallelujah!

As for her eyes... they are startling, aren't they? But she doesn't have meth teeth, so that shoots down that theory... unless the Nashville lege has a better dental plan than I would have suspected...

I don't think anyone's perceptions were changed... I think this is a smart club owner using the weight of the law against some moralizing bluenoses.

Bet the incense at this "church" will be better than normal...

Enlightenment, hell... as I say in a comment above, she needs an intervention... and when you take office, she;ll need a presidential pardon, too!

What a clever way to fool the law! Sounds like a fun place to visit.

And I agree with McManiac, zealots need enlightenment in whatever form it may come. Roping in the choir-dungeon and feeding them some brownies ladened with weed may do the trick.
Yeah, it's not nice, I know. But, it would be so much fun to watch!

Y'know, the church hasn't even opened yet, and I'm already liking it more and more, based on our fantasies... Hope the folks at The United Fellowship Center are paying attention!

I have been to a sex club where the people were very "worshipful". How can this be any different than what happens in a "church" where people are inspired to worship a different way?
Great post and original thinking is always its own reward,
