I’M WAITING FOR THE MAN

I’M WAITING FOR THE MAN

I don’t know what the above woman is waiting for either, but I do know what the man below is waiting for!

I'm waiting for my man
Twenty-six dollars in my hand
Up to Lexington, 125
Feel sick and dirty, more dead than alive
I'm waiting for my man

These are the opening lines sung by Lou Reed in the song, I'm Waiting for the Man, performed by The Velvet Underground. The song is about a man waiting to score some heroin from a male drug dealer in New York’s Harlem.

Americans are renowned for their punctuality. Brits also have a reputation for being quite punctual compared to their European neighbours.

When I travelled to several countries in Africa, time took a new dimension. In The Gambia, guides would joke with British tourists that they have GMT like Britain. In Britain GMT is Greenwich Mean Time, but in The Gambia it stood for Gambia Maybe Time!

It was quite liberating to be free from the tyranny of time; things just happened (or not) at their own time. After a couple of days, this less time-bound attitude was very relaxing. I even stopped wearing a watch.

How punctual are you?
How long will you wait if someone has not turned up on time to meet you?

I’m quite punctual. I usually like to arrive a few minutes early to meetings, appointments and assignations. I’ll wait between 15 and 30 minutes if someone hasn’t turned up on time.

The mobile phone has changed everything. Nowadays, someone running late just sends a quick text to the person waiting. Before the mobile phone, I think people made more effort to be punctual. I’m now sounding like an old fogey; I’ve turned into my father!

I am always early!
I have waited for hours, all day in fact but not for casual meeting...usually for someone to come fix something or the like!! I also get very steamed as time goes on and they don't show up!

How punctual are you? My goal is 15 to 30 minutes ahead of time.

How long will you wait if someone has not turned up on time to meet you? Never more than 15 minutes. When we make an agreement to meet it is almost always at the other persons time of choice. There are obvious exceptions if they call before hand and had an issue. Even with service people that typically give a 3-4 hour window, I don't accept. I just go to someone that values my time as much as I do. My military background made me a real pain in the ass for promptness

1. Very, I'm not a believer in being late.
2. Absolute max of 30 mins.

Having said that, surely coming late is better than not coming at all, ahem!

I hate being late. I used to have my clocks set 10 minutes ahead to avoid being late. Now I live on Island time. There are usually no hands on island clocks. It is lovely letting go most days.

There is a difference between a good BJ and a bad BJ.

I can understand your frustration when these promised deliveries don't arrive in the window they say, especially as they often just say sometime in a day! We've got lives to lead!

95% of the time I'm either early or punctual... If I'm delayed, I call or text ahead to give my eta and let them decide whether I'm worth waiting for.
My cut-off point waiting for people varies... First assignation, they must be on time, if they are going to be delayed and contact me to let me know, they have 45 minutes grace... If it is someone I have known longer, up to an hour (if they call or text to let me know they are delayed). If the first assignation doesn't contact me and is running late, they have 15 minutes before I refuse to open the door or linger for their arrival if a public meeting is taking place... Someone I have known longer gets a maximum of half an hour.
Hanging around does depend on who and what you're waiting for. But with mobiles, there's no reason why people can't communicate now.

Things do happen, but unless it's an accident, death, mobile phone theft or something similar a simple text is the least I hope for when waiting.

We are like minds. I'm punctual and I'd let you know if I was running late if, or hopefully when, we meet! But I wouldn't be late.

I'm pleased to hear that the cavalry are never late!
I hope we meet (on time) one day for a beer to talk whatever.

....I like being on time for meeting and functions...youth of today are not taught manners ..they are taught how to use the cell phone.....

    Blue..
We should put all the youth today on our knees and can give them a good spanking for their lack of manners!

How long will you wait if someone has not turned up on time to meet you? Half an hour tops and if no calls or good excuse it's a deal breaker!
Waiting for over half an hour, without explanation, is definitely a deal-breaker!
