Being a Submissive - a Symposium Submissive that is!

Thanks to humorlife and his "Ninth Virtual Symposium" I write today's post on the topic of Body Image/Imagery.

When I was a there was this one day when a teacher told us that the way we taste food has as much to do with our sense of sight and smell as our own taste buds. So of course at lunch I plugged my nose and closed my eyes and took a bite of the shepherd's pie I loved so much. Of course the flavor was gone. Nothing but texture. It was terrible.

When I think of our bodies I think of the same thing. What if we were blind? Would we still think Barbie was beautiful? Would our sex drive be the same if we couldn't hear a woman moan?

Our eyes can be tricked easily - the right clothes, better posture, etc. But when all that is gone - when we are laid bare, that's when the rest of the senses get their use. That's when we know how attractive we really are to the person we are with. Those who choose to be intimate with us use many senses at once and even throw in a little imagination.

Yet when WE look at ourselves in the mirror we are only using the one sense - sight. And because that is all we use we come away thinking ourselves to be less than others would think of us. Our own body image is like that shepherd's pie - bland.

I know I sound preachy but truth be told I am one of the culprits. My ex-husband left me with a huge Barbie complex and I find it impossible to shake it. I have trouble believing compliments because I don't see myself with all the same senses that others do. I don’t really mean this as some deep confession.

I SIMPLY WANT STAR TREK TO FIX ME!

I mean Gene Roddenberry had the idea for cell phones, for sonic showers, for transporting molecules, hell he even had an idea for world peace. Yet nothing in his shows or movies or books gave women the power to transform their bodies into whatever they believe to be perfect. Granted he didn't often bring an imperfect body on set to begin with, but still he should have thought up a machine or an organism that solves every woman’s problem, right? Ooooh what about a mirror that uses all senses so we see what everyone else sees?

I guess I just believe Science Fiction should be able to solve all of my problems. So let's wake Roddenberry from his death spell and make him solve it, shall we? We can handle him as a zombie, right?

Great post, even better imagination. I am going to try to "see" my body with more than just my eyes.

Red lipstick and "fuck me" shoes. What more could you want?

It is so not easy. And thanks for the compliment and the read.

Your mirror for all senses exists, it even reflects the mind, no need for science.
It stands in an old indian bsaying : "who has a good friend doesn't need a mirror."

Yet ... thanks for sharing your interesting thoughts.

wittywoman replies on 6/28/2015 5:44 pm:
Ah but you'd have to believe what your friend has to say. You aren't seeing through their eyes, you're hearing their thoughts. You have to be in the right frame of mind yourself to take their words to heart.

And you're welcome. Thanks for stopping by!

You bring up such a simple yet wise concept; that we see ourselves with only our eyes while others experience us with all of their senses. If I learn nothing else today, you have opened my eyes about a new perspective about human interactions. Thank you for that.

wittywoman replies on 6/28/2015 5:52 pm:
The question is, the next time you see some hot guy somewhere are you going to review which sense made you think he was hot?

Maybe not - maybe we shouldn't question it too much.

yes, Mr. Roddenberry, beam me up and then fix my molecules....to make me more beautiful, skinny, change my skin tone and blemishes, and change my hair color- and then beam me back.....Voila! I am a new person!! Yes, our self esteem is so tied with our body image. Believe. Believe you are beautiful, and Voila.....you are!

Yeah but if we all did that - took the easy way out - every fitness and diet center would go out of business. It would be a unique financial crisis.. Wonder how the news would cover that?

Our sense of sight is one of our least reliable senses, I say thankfully as I look at myself in a mirror!

wittywoman replies on 6/28/2015 6:06 pm:
We rely on it so much, don't we? My kid asked me the other day if I'd rather go blind or deaf and I couldn't answer him!

Tom Robbins, in one of his books (Even Cowgirls Get the Blues? Jitterbug Perfume?) wrote that smell is 80 percent of love. I don't have the exact quote at hand, but that's pretty close. Might have the percentage wrong.

Similarly, people get 70 or so percent of their information visually. The conclusion? Love is blind.

As for Star Trek: The world went to hell when humans and Vulcans were permitted to interbreed. Where's the Supreme Court when you need it?

Live long and perspire -- and thank you for a great tongue-in-cheek contribution to the virtual symposium!

Pheromones are a huge piece of the puzzle - absolutely. Can see better than smell from a long distance though. Maybe that's a good thing as I drool over guys running down my street.

Humans and Vulcans interbreeding is one of those double-edge swords. If you argue that Spock and Uhura are un-natural then you also end up questioning the relationship that brought Spock to be in the first place.

So not fair...

I love the mix of humor and insight in this post...when I'm having a harsh moment with myself I think about what I would say to a friend who was feeling that too...very different and it helps me ease up and see myself with all my senses!

Always tell the truth
Use kind words
Keep your promises
Giggle and laugh
Be positive
Love one another
Always be grateful
Forgiveness is mandatory
Try new things
Say please and thank you
Say your prayers
Smile

Well I am happy to help but one thing that comes to mind - your quote in the signature of your comment. If you want others to be kind in their expressions to you and each other then how about being that way towards yourself too?

If this were really true then I wouldn't enjoy sex half as much as I do (as an anosmic, I have no sense of smell)... Or if I had a sense of smell, I would die the first time I had sex because it would really blow my mind more than it does already! Ha!

I love science fiction for many of the reasons you listed here.
And a mirror that exposed "us" to ourselves in all our sense would be coveted, indeed.

Someone earlier mentioned that friends could be our mirrors so it may be fair to say our mirrors already exist but we don't take what they say to heart?

I want the sonic shower. Wouldn't that be so much faster?

That's the point of the saying, yes. A friend is only good if trusted blindfolded.
Then you'll get the full-senses reflection you gtold us about, plus your state of mind.
Of course such friends are exceptionnal and can't be purchased, so I reckon
there would be a market for your sci-fi mirror ... which won't solve the self-esteem trouble, anyway.

You don't have a magic device to transform your body, but you can change the way the way you see yourself, and that's a kind of magic itself.
