It was a sad day all around. My hysterectomy happened at the same time the towers were hit. Something bad happens everytime I go to the hospital it seems, but this was the worst.

Now on my Blog: 👄 New Pictures 👓

Recent events have caused me to a bit more sensitive than I normally am which has prompted my reply to your blog. Normally, this is a day I simply shut down and think of 2 good friends. For some reason, I find myself dwelling on those of my past...

Nate was a damn good friend from my college days. We had dorm rooms next to each other and carried each other home more times than i can literally remember. He was in the second tower. He was on the phone with his dad describing the crash of the first tower. His last words were, "oh fuck, there's a plane coming right at us." He loved his guitar and even drunk he could play any song you could think of. Women thought he was cute but unapproachable but he was the guy who would stay up all night making sure the rest of his drunk buddies didn't do anything stupid.

Brian was my best friend. we met our freshman year of high school and hung out all the time. His dream was to join the Army and try for Special Forces or else the Navy and become a SEAL. He joined the Navy and a few weeks after he officially was pinned with his Trident he was home on leave and I gave him a combat knife he had seen years before and had always wanted. He carried it with him everywhere. Less than three years after the towers fell he was on a recon mission in Iraq with three of his Teammates when they saw a convoy being attacked. They immediately landed and brought the enemy forces under fire. When his Teammates were wounded, he attacked the last position by himself and was hit. His last words to his wounded Teammates were, "thank god you guys are ok." He was awarded for his actions at his funeral. A couple months later I had the chance to meet the SEALS he was with as well as several others. They presented me with the combat knife, now well worn, that I had given him many years ago. They said he never went anywhere without it.

Today is a day I remember my two friends and the sacrifices of those who fight for us. Yeah, I'm a bit emotional on this day under the best of circumstances and with everything going on, this year makes me miss my friends more than most.

So many have lost loved ones and others have sacrificed everything. We should honor them and never forget.

I'm not sure how to respond to this post, Jay. It made me so sad, and yet it gave me a bit of solace to know that you haven't forgotten two men who were obviously very important to you.

I know you're going through a rough time, Babe. I hope things start looking up soon .

OH GREAT. I'm all ready to hit your blog with a hilariously funny reply and you go and make a totally serious post...

ON 9/11, I woke up just before 9am, turned on the TV, and I remember my first though was that they were showing "The Towering Inferno" on TCM and I was stunned when I immediately changed the channel and discovered this was news, not a movie, and I was watching one of the trade center towers burning. First I tried to call my sister who at the time lived in Manhattan on E 85th between 2nd and 3rd., not because I thought she was in any danger, but just to see if she was up and aware of the events taking place. The call would not go through and we would not learn of her safety for two more days.

As an aircraft mechanic I began to wonder how the pilots could have made such a stupendous blunder in spite of some very sophisticated proximity warning equipment that these sort of planes have in redundancy. Not a minute later, like the rest of the world, my blood turned to ice as the second plane hit.

As the hours began to pass and in light of the entire air travel system shutting down, (on top of the concern for my sisters safety) it was clear that in a matter of days I'd be laid off and would be one of millions who's life would immediately be adversely affected.

It was a day I will
never forget.

We often get so caught up in remembering the fallen and the fighters, that we forget about the collateral damage to people on the fringe.

I promise to remember them, too.

Thank You for the blog. Iwent to a 9/11 ceremony and reflected back to what I was doing on that day and the call I received to get my military gear together and a few hours later I was told to report in to perform security to protect our nation and citizens. Since then I have been to Iraq and just recently retiredafter 32 years of military service. I wouldn't have it any other way I was glad I gave most of my life to defend this country and have answered my nations call. I just wonder if all Americans will remember this day or are we just forgetting about it and just treating this as another day. For those who remember this day "Thank You".

This will NEVER be 'just another day'. Not as long as there are people who still suffer from the fallout.

Thank you for your service to our country.

Amen..... It's hard to believe it's already been 11 years.
I was watching CNN that morning before going to work and I couldn't believe what I was seeing live.

I'll respect that request GR if Americans spend the same time in silence over the havoc they've wrecked in the rest of the world.

gottaring replies on 9/12/2012 8:11 am:
I would never claim that the events of 9/11 should serve as our penance for the wrongs we've committed as a country. Two wrongs do not make a right.

Anyone who believes that we as Americans are blameless for the actions of our past is seriously deluded. I concur that we've wreaked our share of havoc.

But this isn't about that. This is about mourning the people who were lost that day, and in subseqent days. And I mean ALL LIVES LOST, including the innocent children and families in Afghanistan, Iraq, etc. They matter, too. As do the foreign troops who came to our aid as allies and died defending OUR interests.

They all matter.
