The guides said exactly what you did- straight back, stay loose and keep my heels up . Good advice, Bear .

See, I'm good for something besides perving. Nice thing is, once you get used to it, you'll never forget. Been years since I was in a saddle, and when I recently stepped back into one, seemed like yesterday.

Enjoy your special time with the boy...those memories last forever, too.

Good advice by everyone. A straight back is important to center yourself on the horse, so a bump won't jar you off. I'm sure they'll have you on a walking tour so it will be nice and slow.

"Hop on" sounds like a perfectably acceptable line. Descriptive, creative, welcoming, somewhat flirty. What more do you want??

I'll admit that when this particular 'stallion' uttered those words, I was a bit disconcerted at first. It's not really...'romantic' or 'seductive', ya know? But in retrospect, it was totally in keeping with his particular style, and I found that endearing.

'Hop on', lol. Yeah. I admit it makes me smile .

You know I own 2 horses and have had them most of my life. I've been riding since I was about 7 yrs old when I got my 1st pony. I've bred & trained my own horses in the past but I only trail ride nothing showy or competitive. A healthy dose of fear & respect for an animal that size is a good thing. Losing that will get you hurt or killed. Share your fear with your son and show him you can work through it together. If all you're doing is trail riding at a barn you don't have to do anything but stay in the saddle most of those horses are ass sniffer and only follow the horse in front of them or the trail. That is an easy way to figure out how to balance and keep your center. Enjoy. I can't wait to hear how it was!

Kisses,
LA

It was great! Very calm and well-organized. No fear of the horses wandering off or the kids getting thrown- the guides actually had their horses in hand the whole time . I learned that it doesn't take much of a tug to get my horse to go where I wanted him to, and he was such a beautiful animal!

I might just do this again sometime- and next time, I want to gallop .

No worries. THey'll give you really mellow horses that could follow the trail all by themselves. However, the real trick to being a good rider is to squeeze with your thighs, but that's only something you need if you're getting into the trickier stuff.

Smart as a horse and hung like Einstein.

gottaring replies on 10/1/2012 8:22 pm:
I kinda took for granted that the horses would follow one another and that I didnt need to 'steer', but there are about 50 different trails that they ride every day, so it took a bit of maneuvering to keep Pogo on the right track. It well really well, though, for my first time .

Have a great time. I took a bunch of riding lessons in college, English style. I did a bit of jumping as well. I just never got comfortable with an animal that much bigger than me. But I wouldn't have missed it for the world. Even the one time I was thrown.

My daughter has always wanted to take riding lessons, and like all little girls her age, she hopes daddy will buy her a pony of her own, lol. It's an expensive hobby, but if she takes to it, it might be something worth exploring.

I have never ridden a horse...too scared. I like my animals smaller than me! I hope you survive.

I was raised on a farm. It will be a fun experience for you and your son. Let him know you have fears and that you can both over-come them together.
Yep, just squeeze the thighs.
I just got a virtual image of you in just chaps!

YEEEEE! HAAAAA! ride im' cowgirl!!
I still have fears of flying butt I still fly!(arms get sore sometimes)

gottaring replies on 10/2/2012 6:54 am:
I think showing him that I was a bit scared helped him to overcome his own fear. He was more concerned with showing me that the horse is gentle and that I shouldn't be afraid!!

Jeans--loose but not baggy. Sturdy shoes, preferably with heels (not stilletos) and closed toes. Comfortable shirt. Firm hand pressure--too light a stroke "tickles" and you'll see the skin shake/vibrate trying to get rid of the irritation. Back straight, good seat, knees in, toes out and grip with your thighs (I'm sort of getting excited here).

Echoing what the others have said--Relax, most trail ride horses are almost robotic, if you're calm, they'll sense that. Yes, tell your son this is something you're doing together--it will be that much more special to him.

It's been a while since I've been on a horse. Once you get the hang of it, it's pretty fun. Now I ride on horsepower

It was fun! I found myself wishing that I could trot or gallop after we had been going for about an hour. Baby steps, though, lol.

I've never ridden a horse myself. I always thought I would injure it by hauling my fat ass onto its back. I'm looking forward to reading about your experience.

2022... it HAS be better, right?!

gottaring replies on 10/2/2012 6:59 am:
It was great, Buxie!! And believe me, I was terrified that the horse qwould take one look at me and bolt, lol. But then I recalled an old friend of mine who weighed well over 300lbs who rode her horse all the time- it gave me a little solace, lol.

your gumption was always there. dont sweat the loss of it, like anything it waxes and wanes. look in the mirror and look past the skin, look past the character and the life lived everytime you look in the mirror and then think that little eric might end up scarred and broken before too long if he keeps up the snide comments. too many folks love you too much for you to keep getting hammered by him.
