An easy day

An easy day

Yesterday we hiked further than usual, at Al Sabo. it's hard to tell, on the meandering paths. As the crow files it was only a couple of miles out and a couple back, but the path wanders around a lot, so who knows? Four or five miles, maybe. Maybe less. Anyway, it wore us out, and even Gracie was tired. It was a gloomy drizzly day. So we took it easy today and did a circuit around the prairie at Asylum Lake. It was sunny and warm- fifty degrees. We met a buddy of Gracie's, Jaeger, a yellow Lab. They were very happy to see each other. It only takes forty minutes to do the loop, and we took nearly an hour. I like screwing around and taking time to look at stuff, and take pictures.

And one picture of the South Haven Light, just because I love the photo. I didn't take it, but I wanted to share it.

That is some beautiful scenery. It's nice Gracie got to see an old friend!
I'd like to have her follow that Jaeger around for about a month. Jaeger is six years old and very well behaved. A lot of that would rub off, if Gracie were exposed to it. An old dog can teach a young one far more than I ever could. All my other dogs learned from older ones, but I don't have Rocky any more to teach Gracie. I guarantee he wouldn't put up with any backsass from her! An old timer can learn 'em humility.

I think it was a local who took that picture, and if I'm not mistaken won a prize for it. I used to have a large print of it, but I didn't get custody of it in the divorce. I agree, it's a marvelous shot. I wish I had done one like it. Maybe this winter I'll try- if it ever gets cold!

It was supposed to rain here, so the sunshine was all bonus. The forecast is for falling temperatures and snow Christmas morning. What kind of beer do you like best?

Gracie gets impatient with me. There's a lot to see if you take the time to look for it. She feels the same way about the smells. She's OK with dawdling when there's an interesting scent! She got her first bath ever last week after discovering a really captivating aroma. I think it was raccoon shit! Beauty is after all in the eye, or nose, of the beholder. Like vandals, we washed off the scent.

Me too! If it was a platonic relationship, that is. I get a feed on AssPlace- Lake Superior Photo- that makes up for all the AssPlace social networking every opinion is valuable blah blah blah. I might try getting some lighthouse photos this winter, if we ever have winter. The walk out to that light is plenty majestic in summer. The beach and the pier are crowded with visual delights. if you were to google Lake Michigan Lighthouses, there's no telling what you might find.

It would suck to be the lighthouse keeper if they still had to man that one.
    Trapped inside till spring. LOL!
They had to tend that light from shore every day in the old days. That's a catwalk going out to the lighthouse from the right! This is a long pier and the keeper had to brave that icy catwalk! If he tried walking the pier the waves would sweep him away.

Those pictures are excellent and that last one just blows me away... WOW! Not many things can still induce me to say that. I'm delighted that Gracie got to meet up with Jaeger, it's wonderful when animals have other friends of their own species.
I love pictures of the light in winter, coated with FEET of ice! I hope I can get a photo half that good! PD and I were there in October. The waves in the Black River north of the pier were six or eight feet and on the Lake side were breaking over the pier. We didn't do any walking out there, needless to say.

Thank you, Pixie! I wish I had taken that lighthouse photo! I've seen some beautiful pictures of the lights at both South Haven and St. Joseph encased in ice. Maybe I'll try to take one this winter.
Those blue grey pods are milkweed seed pods. The seeds have flown away in the wind.

Beautiful! We are hoping to get out on the sound tomorrow and over the weekend so I can share pictures of our winter.

There is a difference between a good BJ and a bad BJ.

I'm ready to see them! I really enjoy seeing pictures of where other folks live. I take too many, others don't take enough.

Love the empty milkweed pods! Winter pictures are some of my favorite... they look so bleak at the first glance but then the detail and beauty just pops!!!

There are tricks to it that I have yet to learn, that's a fact! I know how to stay warm and dry, but handling the camera and keeping it clean and the lens clear takes some brain cells that I am apparently missing- but I'm learning. I've worked in the cold weather all my life- now I've got some time to play in it and the fun is coming back.

You can see things this time of year that aren't apparent in other seasons. I love the patterns and textures- bare limbs and branches against the sky, the dormant bluestem.

Ah, thank you apollo! I post them because I want to share that place with all my friends. It's a sanctuary for me. We really don't talk much out there, we just soak it in. I do feel like the photos will get a bit tedious for others sometimes, but I can't help myself. I feel very much at home in the woods and prairies.

The stark beauty of winter you capture in your photos is incredible! Hopefully you'll have one cold spell where it's cold enough to get some good photos of the light house encased in ice. After that, the groundhog can forgo seeing his shadow so we can have an early spring.

You're correct- the beauty is in the season. I'm just winging it with the camera. There's a kind of a process of reduction that happens. I'm walking in the woods and the the sunlight flickers on fir needles and beams around gray trunks and illuminates the moss and I have to try to save the moment, so I try a photo. And I upload it to my computer and I'll find one or two decent photos that come near what I was feeling in the woods but never quite savors it the way I originally did. And I post them here in greatly reduced size and they look OK but I can't post the chill in the air or the scent of the fir or how it is to be immersed in a magical landscape.

Thanks- it IS pretty. Michigan has the same useless crap other places do, like ugly shopping strips and car lots and there's plenty of post industrial decay, too, but West Michigan is rolling and hilly. If you stay away from the Detroit metro area you can find some wild country.

I figure I'm pretty lucky to have Gracie.
