Al Sabo 22 July 2015

We haven't been hiking much for the last couple of weeks, and it was starting to tell on us. So we picked a couple of cool days and went out to Al Sabo. It felt good to be back in the woods again. The dragonflies have had their day, and although I saw a few, the squadrons of a couple of weeks ago have flown on. The deerflies and other biting flies weren't as troublesome either. I wasn't very happy with most of the photos I took, but a few were interesting enough to post. We only walked about three miles. There were a dozen or so other hikers out and a few bikes as well.

It was PD who pushed to get back to the trails- she gained a couple of pounds back- I did too- and we've been slugs lately. We have some hot muggy weather coming up and haven't decided if we'll try to hike in that. Probably not! It was Gracie's first ride out in the back of my new truck. She was a bit hesitant at first, but car means "Al Sabo" to her, so she jumped in and handled it well. I'll have to put a rug back there for her.

One final thing- when you see someone carving on the trunk of a beech tree, it's OK to hurt them.

Well, you'll have to get one!
Thanks Leo. I miss it when we don't hike, but it's easy to get out of the habit when it's hot and buggy.

Great pics! I love hiking.

But...

I don't think your lovely lady will appreciate you carving my initials into that tree

Muggy weather sucks for hiking. I'd give it a miss too if it were me

Thanks for sharing the pics

That just irritates the hell out of me- imbeciles memorializing themselves in the skin of a living thing! If I were a warden or a ranger, I wouldn't last a day. I'd be the latest social media lynching project for "overreacting" to some fucktard defacing nature.
Deep breath.
My lovely lady is very tolerant of me, and my penchant for falling in and out (play on words intended) of love six times an hour in a room with three women in it.

Excellent pics, PD's looking mighty fine, too! How is Gracie doing?
PD is looking very fine indeed these days- thanks for mentioning it. I will pass that along. When I first began taking pictures, Gracie would have no part of that camera. We did a photo shoot of sorts this evening, and I had a hell of a time keeping that damned dog OUT of the picture. I THINK...that Gracie is mellowing a bit, and calming down some- fingers crossed.

All photos are great! But the one before last is exquisite.. WOW

I, too, can rip the heads off of idiots that deface nature. Those who have no respect for nature usually don't have respect for people either.

Thank you honey. I took one a while back when the wter was high, before the algae formed on the surface, but i don't think i ever posted it. it's from the same spot. You can't see the marsh very well in summer without crawling through the brush along the trail.

Thanks Spunky! I love beeches too. They carve beeches because it's so easy and stays forever, but it's really ugly. I know it's human nature to try to do a "Kilroy was here". I just hate seeing them wantonly defaced- it looks like vandalism to me.

Mmmm...they might be lonely. You never know. I know a couple of exquisite and lonely flowers myself. You wouldn't think it from looking at them, as beautiful as they are, but you just never know. Sometimes they just don't get the proper care.
Queen Anne's lace reminds me of elderberry blossom. Those are really delicious fried in butter til golden brown. Queen Anne's lace is edible too but I've never tried it.

I'd love to have you! You should come in winter though. As lovely as it is in spring and summer there's a magnificent monochrome splendor to the forest covered in snow. On a very cold day it's crisp and brisk and invigorating. The least little bit of color- green spruce needles and tenacious golden beech leaves- stands out on all that black and white.

If you gather enough flowers and festoon yourself with them the zombies might not recognize you as a foodstuff. Stupid zombies.

I seem to recall a punishment from Kafka's "In the The Penal Colony" involving having one's transgressions etched into one's skin by a stylus. The punishment was borrowed, somewhat less elegantly, by J.K. Rowling for her Harry Potter series.

Food for thought, no?

Lovey pictures, as well... between PD, Gracie, and Al Sabo, you have quite the choice of models!

Oh yeah! I had forgotten that one! An appropriate punishment for some crimes, which I suppose is why I never get jury duty....

I do have some choice models- thank you.

The desert has it's own beauty, but I like the north woods best. Queen Anne's lace does smell just like carrot- but I've still never eaten it.

Thanks Dayzee! That's a Queen Anne's lace not fully open yet. They fold out like an inverted umbrella. And they're every bit as intricate as the full flower. I think they look pretty cool in all the stages.
