I once tried to build a wooden gate for my stepfather. It endend somehow in a disaster area. Nevermore !

About stone doors in Antiquity, Greek priests used a trick to open them without anything being seen, as if the Gods did it.
Steam ! Ages before Denis Papin and James Watt, steam was domesticated for that single purpose. I find it ... amazing.

Great reading ... after all, you found how to make a neat post on that topic ! I think you can on any

Thank you, and I very much appreciate your remarks!
I've built some disasters too. That'll happen when you try new things. The first bricks I ever laid turned out to be a god-awful pile of rubble. The ancients were far brighter and far handier than they're often given credit for.

I have often wondered what the future will think of this time. Only time will tell. LOL
Thank you for the door education. I find doors fascinating. In Mexico City when I visited the Blue house of Frida Kahlo, I found the front of her house plain and unadorned. The door was hiding some wonderful secrets. It is that plain front door that I came to love the most. I thought it was a beautiful representation of the woman she was. (I think I just started my own "Doors and/or Bridges and/or Gates" Is The Topic For The Eleventh Virtual Symposium post)

There is a difference between a good BJ and a bad BJ.

Y'know, a few days ago (pre-symposium) I was wondering what happened to the construction posts you wrote last year... I mean, I know what happened to the posts, but I've wanted updates on the projects.

There is nothing exceptional about this post. It is well-written, well-researched, appropriately illustrated, reflective of some of your passions, and thoroughly enjoyable. About par for the course for you. Ho-hum.

A question: What do you know about very large, very heavy doors which are either weighted, or which use hidden hydraulic systems, so that they can open with minimal apparent force? Read about those somewhere once, and found the mechanics fascinating... and this from someone who can barely hammer a nail straight. (Loved the etymology of "dead as a doornail," which I hadn't known before, and which I will work into cocktail conversation as soon as I can.)

Glad you didn't sit this one out!

Stop in, read, and offer comments at my "swinging as seen in the media" blog, "Confessions of a Lifestyle Man" humorlife, which is also the home of the monthly virtual symposium. New post: The Virtual Symposium Returns Lets Pick A Topic

If you write about Frida Kahlo's house that will be a fun read!

Thank you my friend.
Well, you know the construction projects got put on hold. As much as I'd like to build a timber framed shop the city building code makes it REALLY complicated, and that made it expensive. I don't want to rebuild Rome, I just wanted a fucking shop. So we're doing some fix up projects instead. They might inspire me to find a creative way around the problem.

I know less about power assisted doors than you do. They sound VERY cool. I've used weighted doors, with a counter weight like a sash weight, but I've never made any.

I'm glad I didn't sit it out too. Thinking about woodworking put me in a better frame of mind.

Nice post. I've built a few doors myself and I'm proud to say they are still swinging . I removed all the old panel doors when I remodeled my home as they were to small and a mix match of stiles . I kept them though as I couldn't bring myself to throw them out. I replaced them with new solid wood raised panel doors as I like the style.

I am glad you didn't sit this one out either kzoo. You are very knowledgeable about doors and very crafty too. Most people just stroll through a door and never give it a second thought. I think more than a few of us will take another glance, take notice next time.

You know . . . a girl appreciates a man who knows how to use his wood and is good with his hands too! Oh, I am so sorry, I shouldn't have said that, forgive me. I am a baaaad girl.

    I love you Kzoo. xo
Oh, I know how to use my wood AND I'm good with my hands, which is useful when I'm all alone.
