Color!
Color! Before we get started here let me say right up front: I took all the photos in this post. These however, are NOT my trees. I claim ownership as a resident of the county, but it's ownership in common with all the other citizens of Kalamazoo and Kalamazoo County. You will see the back of a woman in a photo here- the woman is my wife. I have documents to prove it. This weekend we hiked at Asylum Lake. Sunday we took a trail across the tallgrass prairie to the other entrance on Parkview Avenue and from there down to little Asylum Lake. It was warm- sixty nine degrees and sunny and I had to take off my longsleeved shirt. As usual we had a grand time. Gracie played in the creek, I saw beautiful co-eds frolicking in the forest and PD enjoyed being in nature with her beloved. Oh, and did I mention, I was there too? We trekked back by way of the bigger lake and stayed in the forest nearly all the way. I took some nice photos, but at this time of year the colors change dramatically from day to day, and are different in different forests. Asylum Lake is dominated by oaks, and they will change color later and hold it longer, while not being quite as brilliant as the woods elsewhere. And so today we went back to Al Sabo, and having been away for a couple of days the difference was breathtaking. This isn't even what the tourist bureaus call "peak" color yet. That will come this weekend or even next week. Walking in these woods is like immersing yourself in a Renoir, like melding into a Van Gogh. It is simply magical to once a year be able to just stand under that magnificent bright foliage. Every where the eye turns is riveting and you don't want to turn away, but you see something brilliant out of the corner of that eye and are drawn to look. Gracie does not care. She is very Winnie the Pooh about it all. "Yes. I think today is a very nice day! Let's walk." She senses far more with her nose than we do, and far more than we see. Her ways are not our ways, but we see eye to eye enough to form a partnership of sorts and it works. Now and then we quarrel, but we're still in this together. We compromise. It was a grey overcast day. Had the sun shone it would have been even brighter in the forest, but today felt like a gift. I felt quite Pooh like myself today. It was a very good day to be alive, and walking through such a marvelous landscape. The world here is a special place in October. The one time of year we are grateful to see the lush green fade and give way to yellow, gold, red, rose and brilliant orange. In a while we'll be in the monochrome of winter, white and black, brown and grey. But for now the forest is literally ablaze with color, and I love it. Become a member now and get a free tote bag. |

Great colors and composition. We will need to see those papers, 3 certified copies of each for the INSPECTORS. Since I wrote my silly, but long car story my eyes are a bit tired. Did you write "I Pooh'd myself today."? When the going gets weird, the weird turn pro. The only thing we have to fear is fear itself.

What a magnificent place. I love this time of the year, but it is so very sad as well, because the days are numbered now. Soon it will give way to winter and cold and staying indoors and I am not looking forward to that at all. Become a member now and get a free tote bag.

I have a few of those three legged twisty things. I also have a one legged thingy. In this country we call them "tripod" and "monopod". I tried dragging some of that stuff out into the woods with me but I started looking like a porter in a Tarzan movie. I guess I could take a three legged twisty thing once in a while and get a family photo. It's a lot of crap to carry. There are even times I regret having the camera. I tend to get focused on taking photos and while it doesn't exactly detract from the hike, it does divert my attention somewhat. Become a member now and get a free tote bag.

Man, that last photo is spectacular! I too love this time of year in the woods... it is as if the bright colors almost color the air around you... very cool post and thanks for posting something that made me think about the natural beauty of fall Become a member now and get a free tote bag.

We seem to be getting a bit cooler lately, but it's hard to know whether to attribute that to climate change or natural cycle. We might be one of those places that gets cooler and wetter rather than warmer and drier due to global warming. I'd like to go house hunting with you though and PD would be an enthusiastic companion for you. She LOVES shopping for houses! Become a member now and get a free tote bag.

I'm wondering you felt the need to clarify that these were not trees that you owned or that the woman in the photo was your wife. Le sigh. I can only imagine why you needed to write that. Great photos. This makes me sad, that the colors end at one point, and everything goes deathly still for some months on end. Kk The observant make the best lovers, I may not do right, but I do write, I have bliss, joy, and happiness in my life, Kitkat Come check out my blog KItkat1415 check out this post by me Adventures In Body Grooming #39 April Topic Link: What Lies Beneath If April Showers Oh Bloody Hell What Kind Of Weather Turns Me On Bloggers Symposium 40

Oh yeah, I've seen those. I don't have one. I have two or three full size tripods and a monopod (which is actually pretty useful) and a few mini tripods. I'd get better pictures with a tripod- I throw a lot away. But I don't much play with settings when we're hiking, or take a lot of time at it. I dawdle and have to catch up a lot as it is. I just wander along and snap quick shots and hope for the best. I also take a lot of shots of any one scene. Usually I get a usable photo that way. What I really would like to have is a good macro lens! Then I'd really want to use the tripod. But Gracie would be especially exasperated with me- she wants to GO! Everything goes dormant and rests. We'll be out there though. Winter is a fine, quiet time in the forest, under a blanket of new snow. I love the silence of winter in the forest.
