Learning the hard way

When I first joined the site, two types of women were drawn to me above all - one tapped into my intelligence and the other into my kindly nature (more about these another time). This wasn't great news for me as both were/are fundamentally flawed - usually intelligence matters most to those in an educational environment - I'd get the occasional date with teachers/lecturers/librarians/museum workers.

I hate to say it but this isn't a community that is particularly slick at presenting themselves and even if you meet a 'progressive' teacher they'll show their true colours eventually. The low point for me was a date in early 2012 when I met a French Caribbean girl in Islington for a few drinks on a Friday night. Because she was too mean to buy a tube ticket she travelled to Islington (her choice of venue) by bus and arrived 40 mins late. Despite being a woman she adhered to French dress laws for men, wearing a beret. The first part of the date was acceptable though short on laughs, then things went downhill rapidly.

For 30 mins she had a conversation AT me about politics and how all politicians were without exception evil and didn't care about anyone but themselves. I pointed out to her that democracy wasn't perfect but generally better than any other system of government. At one of the rare moments I could get a word in edgeways I pointed out how South Africa was a better place since becoming democratic, as more people had access to clean water, housing, electricity and primary education etc.

I never thought I'd meet a black person who'd take exception to my endorsement of the end of apartheid but I actually found one! She stood up, said 'You're not human' and stormed out of the pub. In retrospect this was a good thing as I'm too polite to leave someone hanging like that but I couldn't wait for the date to end.

If you're a teacher reading this and you don't like it - tough shit - dates are not an opportunity to sharpen up your telling off and talking down to skills on adults.

Oh, dear.

Is it wrong that I laughed? With you, not at you, honestly! Haha.

I'd have ditched her as soon as I found how she was too mean to buy a tube ticket

Lol Holly it's not bad at all to laugh. One of my entertainment heroes Greg Pickhaver once said, 'comedy comes because there is nothing funnier than people being deadly serious.'

This was my worst date ever and I'm glad it happened because if I go on a mediocre one now at least I can console myself by thinking 'at least she wasn't that girl from Guadeloupe.' I guess unless I get shot, stabbed or vomited on during a date in the future it will never be quite as bad again.
