What an ASS!

Body image, the 9th Virtual Symposium

I know I'm average at best. Several women I have been with have said I am handsome, but I know better I've come to accept what I am and how I look, it ain't gonna change

Flashback to 197late something. I heard a girl in school...one of the hot girls...say out loud as one of the "hot" guys had just walked by "OMG he has such a nice ass!"

I wasn't involved, just passing by as well. But I thought about it later...weird....girls like a guys ass the way we like a girls ass?? It was then I realized I had no ass I never really thought about it before but man...completely white man's ass.

I didn't like that. It was bad enough I wasn't popular, chubby and had only a few friends, but now I don't even have an ASS!! I knew I wasn't going to be one of the "in" crowd because I was chubby but I didn't really care, I preferred doing the things I wanted to do plus I didn't have the other necessary "tools" for belonging to that "in" group...money, car, clothes etc.

Looking back I can see it certainly affected my self esteem... a thought inspired by another post earlier Being the first offspring from my parents I had no one to clue me in to certain things about growing up, thus I was a bit of an easy target for teasing, being chubby didn't help with that either

I suppose if I had someone to look up to while growing up I may have had a different outlook on certain things but I don't think it would have been much help. My own perspective about my body image was a negative one and it was reflected by my self esteem. Probably why I developed a sense of humour early on

These days I truly value my sense of humour as being quite above average and a great asset to my personality

I now know why I had to endure such body image issues when I was younger...it gave me something I value greatly today I have said many times 'Things happen for a reason, you may find out at some point or you may NEVER know the reason why, but there's a reason'. I now know

ASIDE from all this, I would like to mention something I noticed in a couple other posts about self image being imposed upon others. Unless it's a positive comment people should learn to just STFU. I'll never understand how an adult can say something so harmful to a , just wrong are to be nurtured in a positive environment, a place negativity does not exist

Everyone is on a different plane of intelligence. Some people's plane has not taken off yet!!

Great post, Kittylikker! I was kind of on the fringes of different groups in school, so I got picked on some too, mostly just for being an outsider. The jocks picked on me for being too skinny and too bookish, and the brainy kids dissed me for being a farm boy and so on and so on. Kids can be damned cruel to each other, and that hurt sticks. I fought back by being a smart ass.

I was not so much a smart ass for fear of getting my ass kicked, so I just went about my business and pretty much kept to myself I figured if I could make them laugh instead they'd be less inclined to impose violence upon me

Hmm... Why is it that now I want to refer to you as Mr.A$$?

Great post, KL! I was a nerd all of my life but became quite popular once my curves began to develop, but I didn't like that kind of popularity and fought back with my best weapon - sarcasm.

I would have to agree that when girls become young women they get noticed a little more

I am glad you want to call me MR. Ass and not just ass

a very interesting post. It seems that many of us here have similar identity issues. Many of us were the chubby one, like you, I learned early to be smart and funny. 'Cause you get be intentionally funny if you're dumb.

Red lipstick and "fuck me" shoes. What more could you want?

By this post you seem well adjusted and insightful. I'd say that puts you ahead of more than half of the population. And in a sense of humor and kindness and I'd say that you're in the top percentage. Just be you. Thanks for sharing.

It's far better to have no ass than to be an ass!
Like you, I feel that if someone can't say anything nice it's generally best not to say anything at all. A few people call this being dishonest; I see it as being respectful to others.

kittyliquor519 replies on 6/28/2015 3:11 pm:
Oh absolutely spunky If I am required to give an answer and be honest about it I try to be as honest as I can without being hurtful. It may be tough sometimes but I always take a moment and think about how I would want to hear the answer

Well here's the thing, we choose to accept if people are trying to make us feel bad about ourselves, or choose to not accept it. It's pretty much that simple but it is hard to de-program ourselves of societal pressure and just be happy with ourselves.
I read "The Four Agreements" a while back and it freed me from what others expected of me. It defined what I should expect of myself. And I try everyday to do that very thing. Some days I'm successful in my eyes, some days, not so much.

I agree that people should STFU if they don't have anything nice to say to a kid.

Hi KK, thanks for stopping by!!

Sometimes choices can be tough to make, especially if you're younger and maybe easily influenced by the media. But like in many situations the solution is easier said than done

But as you said, it comes down to acceptance and willingness to do so

Somehow I think those days when you think you weren't so successful, you actually were

I totally agree, remarks made to children, including teenagers affect how a person views themselves. On thing i remember a boy in middle school said, she is pretty from the face down. Seriously, that girl heard the remark. Just think what you says affect people. I have learned to choose my words wisely especially if someone want advice...............thegrls

Some people just don't understand how much hurt words can cause...I suppose until it happens to them

When asked for opinion or advice I always try to be as honest as possible without being mean

Glory be! You seem to have united the formerly fat kids who became smart asses -- and I proudly count myself among that group!

As for actual asses, and the shapliness thereof... it seems that our experiences have shaped us into who we are today, and I rather like us, as a collective group...

Was wondering if you'd ever get around to me, saving the best for last I see

Funny how that works out, spend a few years being the butt of the jokes (so to speak) when we were young and as it turns out we spend most of the rest of our lives being the cool ones everybody likes, with all the friends
