No offense, but...

I recently read a blog, in which the author stated that a person cannot offend you unless you take offense. As someone who is not easily offended, I find this to be very true. On the same subject, have you ever noticed that whenever someone starts a sentence with "No offense, but..." they are likely about to say something offensive. Do they really think saying "no offense" will have any effect on whether or not you are offended. If someone doesn't take offense at the ensuing statement, they wouldn't have anyway, making the lead-in completely unnecessary. If they do take offense, the lead-in turns out to be false, making the phrase "No offense, but..." one of the most pointless in the English language.
