Broken hearts

When someone that you love tells you that they no longer want to see or speak to you, how do other people deal with the situation?

I suffer from clinical depression, so when this happens, albeit it has only happened once in the past 20 years and it has devastated me, what does anyone do? How can you forget the person that you truly loved? Is it impossible?
