Tulip Time 08

The town I live in celebrates their Dutch heritage with a large festival each year. It is called Tulip Time. We have parades, rides, Dutch dancers, and of course.....carnival food! Recently we became REALLY progressive and added a beer tent too. Red Tulip beer is yummy y'all!

All the streets downtown are blocked off and the crowds start gathering hours before the parade starts. It never ceases to amaze me just how many tourists travel far and wide for some flowers. Granted, it is ALOT of flowers and I think they are pretty, but I don't know if I would plan a vacation around them.

I grew up in a small town in Iowa called Orange City. They had a Tulip Time festival too, just on a much smaller scale. It is a sister city to this town.

My favorite part of the whole shebang is a toss-up between the food (duh) LOL and seeing all the different ethnicities dressed up in authentic Dutch costumes.

One of my fave pictures from when I was growing up is me and my sister in our Dutch costumes when we were 1 and 3. We are adopted. She is Dutch, had the blonde hair and blue eyes, looked the part. I am Irish, Scottish, and Indian, dark complexion, brown eyes, looked so cute with us side by side in those costumes....

I haven't attended a parade since my was young but still wander down there for an elephant ear! Damn those are wicked. NOT on any kind of healthy eating plan LMAO! Shelled out $5 for a large fresh squeezed lemonade too. YUM! I was cracking up at the assortment of fried foods offered though. The sign listed deep fried twinkies, deep fried snickers, deep fried oreos, etc....I jokingly said "why not just pour hot grease right down my throat!" The people next to me ordered deep fried snickers.

Anyone coming to the Michigan meet n greet tomorrow? I look forward to seeing ya if you are!

Dutch are definitely into deep-fried stuff; it's some of the heaviest stuff I've ever eaten.

I also love their licorice--salted and unsalted.

Have fun at the meet.

I attended that event in Holland about twenty years ago. The day was so cold that I darn near froze to death because I didn't have a warm enough coat with me.

I just love to see all the little Asian and Hispanic kids in their Dutch costumes. This town is about 35 % Hispanic culture. The world would be SO dull without diversity, eh?

I was in Holland a few years ago for a graduation my niece was graduating from Hope College..I had never been to Holland during the festival..oh my heavens what beautiful tulips we took the tour that is something I will never forget..In fact yesterday I was telling a friend about it wondering what happened to my pictures..while we were there I had bought tulips in all different colors they sent them the fallowing year to be planted..they came up so very pretty, when we moved a few years back I forgot to dig them up wish I had...you live in a beautiful city, enjoy it...

It is actually a pretty town. Probably just get desensitized to it by being spoiled enough to live here for an extended period of time. Glad you enjoyed it.

Hi Purp! What is an elephant ear? Never heard of it! The festivities sounds like soooooo much fun! I do love tulips....need to plant some one of these days, lol! Wish I could have been there! I love that kind of stuff....especially the food!!! That beer sounds yummy too!!! I love beer Hope you have a fantastic weekend, Sweetie!!!

Sometimes we underestimate the power of a touch, a smile, a kind word, a listening ear, an honest compliment, or the smallest act of caring, all of which have the potential to turn a life around.

purpletrashcan replies on 5/19/2008 2:28 am:
The beer tasted alot like dark or amber beer. Yum An elephant ear is a HUGE piece of fried dough with cinnamon and sugar on it, then you can add toppings too if ya wanna ....like bavarian cream, cherries chocolate etc...wicked!

Sounds like a nice thing to celebrate spring is here. I trust your word on the tulip beer but sounds kind of flowery. : ) Have seen the deep fried just about anything. Think these ideas come from college students with a fryer and just enough money for the vending machine.

We have a lot of odd festivals around as well as some obvious ones. We are celebrating Minnesota's Sesquicentennial this week. There is Kolache Days, Oktober Fest, Aquatennial, Winter Carnival, Jesse James Days, Raspberry Festival, Dylan Days, Renaissance Festival, Studebaker Festival and hundreds more. One of my grandfathers loved going to see steam powered farm equipment.

Somehow I have missed trying Elephant Ears. I also haven't tried some of those deep fried things and pork chops on a stick. At our State Fair you can get alligator, ostrich and buffalo meat among other things.

The perversity of the universe is unbounded.

Fair food is quite something, eh? I saw an entire show about it on The Food Network once. Don't ever try an eephant ear....they are wicked! LOL

Nothing better than a good old greasy elephant ear. Sounds like the zits will wake up from their long nap and start popping up all over the place when the festival is over.

Is that the Holland Festival? Do they sell wooden shoes as well as wooden dildo's?

purpletrashcan replies on 5/19/2008 6:38 am:
Oh, now you went and did it!

.................

You jinxed me, and they are here!

LMAO!
