A strange encounter.... Just earlier this evening...I was sitting by myself at a coffee shop, minding my own business and sipping coffee while reading a book...and who should come along...         . . .  . . . . Two women popped by and asked to share the table...always the gentleman...I invited them to please do... One woman looked to be in her 30s...extremely pretty but was crying...big yet swollen eyes...a cute, straight but red nose...gorgeously demure and shy-looking...smooth skin, sharp features, long eyelashes, and flowing silky black long hair...even the way she dabbed her nose with a piece of tissue was poetry in motion... The other looked to be in her 60s...the typical market auntie type...very skinny...white hair, and not much of that...wrinkled face and strangely without any front teeth....she mumbled either to herself or to her companion....and it was she who asked if they could sit... From what the older woman said, it became clear that she was the auntie of the other...and she was giving her niece some talking to...man...no wonder the sweet one was crying... After listening for a while, I decided I could no longer sit out when I heard this absolute gem from auntie..."Men will always cheat...give them meat everyday and once in a while they will want to try vegetarian...the question is how much and how often they stray, not if. Most will know how to wipe their mouths and clean up after themselves, but your husband is too stupid to do that..." I, always the hero, came to the cutie's rescue... "So sorry auntie," I said..."I'm not sure I agree with what you said....not every man will cheat..." She looked at me like I was stupid...I thought she didn't like the interruption...but noooo...I WAS stupid!! "Young man..." she said..."are you married?" I shook my head....my cute one just sat there blinking, her mouth slightly opened...she can't believe some idiot man would join in and ask for this trouble... There it was....a flaw on my perfect beauty...one of her front tooth overlapped another...otherwise, there were two straight rows of very white teeth...wow...this girl was beautiful...seriously... "Do you have a girlfriend?" Auntie asked again... "Yes." A word I regretted immediately as I shot a quick look at my sweet one... "Have you ever cheated on your girlfriend?" She demanded. oh shit...what have I gotten myself into?? "Errrrmmmm..." I looked at the cute one...and her eyes were laughing..."errrr....I guess....maybe...I have..." I answered sheepishly... "No...no guess, no maybe, have you or have you not?" Auntie was relentless... "If just go out for a movie, count or not?" I didn't want her victory to be too easy... "COUNT!" She said at the top of her voice... I scanned around the coffee shop quickly...someone might think I'm hitting on her and maybe call the police to save me from myself...unfortunately, no one else was interested... "As long as you meet other girls behind your girlfriend's back, it counts as cheating." She stared at me like I've just her daughter...or maybe even her... "Ok, then I have cheated on my girlfriend...but not every man is as bad as me..." Valiantly, I tried to argue a lost case... Auntie shook her head and took a deep breath...come to think of it...she wheezed when she wasn't talking...how could someone short on breath talk without a break for long periods of time??? To induce a time out, I quickly asked her if she and her niece would like something to drink..I'd go order it for them...she shook her head again and waved...a guy came quickly to her side and took her order...wow...when I ordered earlier, I had to almost throw a chair at this same guy before he reluctantly took my order...clearly, everyone except me, could see that this woman is not to be messed with... (cont) Auntie continued her lecture on how men are all lecherous...and I thought I was under siege...at that table...I represented all the men in the world...and she unleashed her hatred on me... With a brave face...I absorbed everything she threw at me...even nodding and agreeing with her on many points...yes yes, men are no angels...yes...we can't stop thinking about sex...and yes...of course auntie...men are all bad...yup...smelly too... The more I agreed, her temper seemed to calm...but the cute one was even cuter than before....her nose still red, and there were tear tracks on her face...she wore almost no make up so there was not problem with make up running...her eyes sad but the corners of her mouth tilted slightly upwards...she was amused at the scene...  To be honest...if we weren't in a public place...if her auntie weren't there...and if the topic of the hour weren't how men are all bad seeds...I would have jumped her and kissed those rose-like lips and make her feel all better...okie...maybe not better...but at least make her feel good... However...I couldn't let my mind drift...auntie demanded complete attention and I didn't want to risk agreeing with something when I didn't hear her... She told me about what the husband did and wanted to know if I thought it was acceptable...blimy...isn't it embarrassing when relatives show our baby pictures and tell tales of how we fucked up when we were young...here was a woman telling a complete stranger about how a man strayed with his wife sitting right beside her...what gave 'old' people the impression that this is the way to go...I'll never understand...at about this time...the sweet one looked embarrassed... I had to cut auntie off...watching the pretty one suffer in silence was too hard to bear... "Auntie..." I said..."whenever something like this goes wrong...it's easy to blame one person...normally there are two sides to the ..." "What do you mean?" She hissed..."it the man's fault. What did she ever do to him? There can be no excuse to cheat on your wife..." "Yes..." I was conceding ground faster than I had anticipated..."But with such a lovely wife, he must be blind or mad to want to cheat on her..." "That why!!!" she agreed..."he should thank his lucky stars that our Ming Yen even married him..." Oh....so the cute one has a name...and a sweet name at that...I like... (cont) So far...I have not heard the pretty one's side of the story at all...auntie was relentless and the cute one didn't get a chance to speak... I did what I thought was the decent thing...turning to the sweet one... "What is your thoughts on this?" I enquired... "Aiya, already told you the thing mah..." Auntie had to intercept..."She is just a poor woman in this, a victim!" "I know auntie..." I said, as pleasantly as I could..."But she must have her own thoughts about this right? Surprisingly, auntie stood up and gingerly walked away...I was concern for a second, but when I realised that the pretty one didn't follow, I wished auntie would walk faster and further away... I turned my attention back to the cute one...she stopped weeping...just sat there...sad...dejected...lost... I couldn't believe my eyes...this girl is so pretty, she should be in show business...or at least be a famous model...how come she is where she is now?? As I 'checked' her out...she wore the simplest of tee-shirts, knee-length shorts and slippers, a $10 watch and a fake gold ring...nothing on her said she had any success in life...though I'll be the first to admit that seeing is not always believing... She still didn't say a word...but she started to look at me...which was a step forward... "How do you feel now?" I asked, trying to get some reaction from her... She shrugged...and fidgeted with a mushed clump of tissue... "Please...I really want to help...and I can't unless you tell me what's on your mind..." I said again... She said something...though loud and clear, I understood nothing...but everything became clearer to me...and my heart sank... (to be continued...) . . . . . . . I told auntie that I might be able to help and she freaked out...she didn't want any help unless I am a lawyer and get her niece legally away from the cheating wanker (or some colourful word to that effect...) I asked her to check with her niece...is that what she wanted...auntie didn't care...someone so young won't know what's good for her... Then a breakthrough...or a faux pas...depending on how one looks at it...I asked auntie...what if it was her husband who cheated...would she be so quick to kick him out?? Silence.... The pretty one spoke up first...uncle cheated on auntie 20 odd years ago and she kicked him out without hesitation...auntie looked indignant... Time for the surgical team to come remove my foot from my mouth...but they are never around when I need them... A quick look at the ceiling and my mind returned... "20 years ago?" I asked.... Auntie nodded..."and told him to never come back..." "Well...auntie...may I ask you then...were these 20 years any fun for you? I mean...was it better with him out of your life?? or do you think he might have changed for the better and you'd have him to share your life for the last 20 years?" (cont) Okie...I admit I have lost the plot...so I have no idea how exactly to continue...however, for my few fans out there...I'll just lay out what happened... Once I got two teary women at the table...I talked auntie into letting me try to help...she didn't want to forgive the husband...but I insisted that it's the niece's feelings that should be more important...she reluctantly agreed... I talked to the pretty one for a while longer and she called her husband...he joined us for a coffee...he looked sad too and auntie gave him shit whenever he opened his mouth.... Before he got there though...I made sure the cute one understood that it will be impossible to prevent him from cheating on her again...but to lessen her heartache...he should learn not to be so careless...it made sense to her...but auntie grumbled...which we ignored... When I talked to him...he admitted that he was stupid to do what he did...and promised he won't ever do it again etc...I pulled him to one side...and told him that he has a really good thing going here...there's no reason to spoil it...if...I stressed...if he was ever tempted again...think about what he stands to lose...and if he decides that it is worth it...make sure he does it discreetly...breaking her heart is not forgivable...I think he understood... At the end of the night...the cute one asked for my number, in case she needed more advice...I said no...I whispered into her ear that I found her extremely attractive and if she ever called me, I'd be tempted to seduce her...she blushed nicely...hopefully, I've injected a tiny bit of self-esteem into her...mind you...I didn't do it for her sake...it's for my sake...seriously...I wanted to seduce her all night...and only auntie's present prevented me from making a fool of myself...
