wow! i'm so glad you got a chance to be involved in the Special Olympics! Will you be doing a lot more Olympics related stuff then?

Did you hear about the girl who wasn't allowed to compete in the Special Olympics (swimmer) - because there's a possibility that she might walk - and yet, she's been in a wheelchair for the past 7 yrs! I thought there was something wrong with the logic they used there - she's paralyzed now, and she's been working through her paralysis - now. So... why should she be excluded because maybe, someday, she may walk? Things like that make me so mad.

I think it's a good thing to question why you're on this site, and for that matter, question everything you do. Because we are constantly changing and growing, we came here to get some need met, and maybe it works, maybe it doesn't. WE're not obligated to stick with something that's no longer meeting a need.

I've had to re-evaluate my presence here several times. I joined because i wanted to meet someone. That was more difficult than i thought it would be, but i found the blogs. That meets a very basic need for me - not just in being able to write freely, but also from interacting with others on my blog & theirs... i find that it really helps me at this point in my life.

and even in this, most unlikely of places, i learn valuable things. take a look at the post i've linked on my signature... that post meant a lot to me. (it's from another blogger).

I hope you keep gathering good memories even through the dark times. =)

One of the worst things I had to contend with was what we called a "speeding ticket" situation. Basically the competitors are grouped and race according to ability, and if they go 15% faster than the rest they get disqualified. So imagine the situation when, fired up and adrenaline pumping because of the occasion, they suddenly outperform the rest and win. And then, thinking they will get gold, they don't? Everyone that takes part gets an award, but its the medals they look for. I don't think it's right that to someone with intellectual disability reality dawns when they get to the award ceremony.

So now I've done all three. I had some Team GB swimmers back to present awards and perform in the pool so was pleased to be able to link all three - Olympic, Paralympic and Special Olympic at the same time. It was a special time and I'm told a first - so a bit historic. And yes, the crowd reaction to the video message from Tom Daley was fantastic too, even though apologising for not being there. I've been invited to the Commonwealth Games next year, Sotchi and Rio but there's a big cost personally involved and I'm not sure I can afford it on my current circumstances so will have to see.

A "speeding ticket"??? Isn't it the 'fault' of those who are doing the grouping, to have not considered that rush of adrenaline that would help someone to perform better in a contest??? omg. that is simply not right... i mean, what are the fat healthy people gaining from putting such restrictions on those who have already gotten a bad deal in life?

how about 'setting a record in your ability group' - that isn't allowed either? oh, this is bothering me so much now...

i hope it works out for you to go to the Commonwealth games too! maybe they'll want you bad enough that they'll help you fund the trip! =)
