One of my favorite days of the year.

One of my favorite days of the year.

One of the traditions that fell to me, cause my only sister has a hard time boiling water, is making Kolaches. It starts Wedsday night making the dough, cause it has to rise over night. Then up early Thanksgiving morning to roll them out and bake em. Then after the Thanksgiving day is over, we hit one of my favorite days of the year. The Friday after , when we go pick out a tree.

The favorite around my house is Poppy Seed and Cream Cheese Kolaches. And we make them in rolls, as opposed to individual Kolaches. So I made a batch for my daughters to take to the Thanksgiving dinner yesterday. I decided not to go. No sinister or depressing reason. I just really needed some alone time. Made myself a giant Porterhouse Steak , watched the game, drank some wine, and enjoyed a peaceful quiet day . Anyways..the Kolaches.

In following our tradition. They have to be made in a bowl my grandmother got as a wedding present. Here's some pics of the process .

Then this morning it was off to pick out a tree. Wish I could post pics of the tree selections, but not putting pics of the grandkids on here. LOL

Anyways...tree is up and decorated. We have always bought the a new ornament every year, so there are no two ornaments alike. Some homemade ones from the . This year, I got some from a great friend on here. To commemorate the puppy. LOL

Though, wondering how long it's gonna look good, cause the puppy is already interested. I give it a week before somethings chewed up or the tree is missing all the bottom limbs. That damn puppy is a goat.

I learned a lot about cooking, back when i opened restaurants for a living. So I was used to just throwing everything to the dishwasher. LOL These days, I'm pretty good at cleaning as I go, and there's rarely much of a mess when I'm done.

It was a great day. Though most of my family was mad at me.

Well of course there's a Cowboy stocking.

The Kolaches are from my Czech/Polish side of the family. Little pastries that can be filled with everything from sausage to fruit. Good stuff. LOL

Yeah, that's how grandma's recipe is spelled as well. But we've Americanized it. LOL.

And I've seen my grandma make them that way too...or the filling in the center. In reality, the true kolaches were always individual danish. I'm not sure when Grandma started making some of them in rolls.

And yeah, I'm not holding out high hopes for the tree this year.

My oldest is heading over with two of the grandsons, I have my two daughters here today. So...it's my kind of afternoon/evening. Making them all dinner. Sitting around relaxing, talking and chasing the grandsons around. Life is good.

That bowl is so cool. What a fun tradition, making the kolaches.

We used to get our trees the weekend after Thanksgiving, going to a tree farm and picking the perfect tree. Nearly all of the ornaments on my tree are unique...made by the kids, or purchased to commemorate a trip or special memory. I love the memories as I unwrap each one to put them on the tree. I've even got some really old ones that belonged to grandparents'

If you golaches you could probably find them at WalMart.

When the going gets weird, the weird turn pro.

My grandma had an identical bowl... Did they all shop at the same store? I'm not much of a baker... or should I say... I just don't bake. Looked good. 👍

Yeah, my two daughters are already fighting over who gets it next. I'm like , you girls mind waiting for me to die first? haha

I like the unique ornament idea. Makes the tree special every year.

There's actually only one strand of blue, wrapped inside the tree. All the others are white. But for some reason, the blue took over. Not that I mind a cowboy blue tree.

Not today I couldn't. I wouldn't even drive past a Walmart on Black Friday.

Hell, back then they probably didn't have a big selection to choose from. Probably damn near every grandma out there had one of these. LOL

Thanks..they are good. Flaky, moist, not too sweet.

One of the towns west of where I live has a Czech Festival every October. Kolaches! They make them individually and with so many choices for filling! Yum...yours look soo good!
I know Pooka isn't grown yet, but she's getting old enough that you should be able to teach her to leave the tree alone. Hopefully. lol Maybe a doggy chew toy to distract her?

She has a collection of chew toys you wouldn't believe. She'd still rather chew on a stick she found in the back yard. She knows when she's done or doing something wrong..You can see her hang her head.. Still doesn't stop her.

When I looked up the breed they said a bunch of stuff, but the thing that stood out? They are a stubborn breed, and at times will disobey just because.

Yep...that sounds like Pooka.

Those were my grandfathers favorites, and yeah there was always sausage Kolaches around. That and they always had prune filled ones. None of us kids liked those. haha

I've warned my kids since I got the bowl about 14 years ago, not to even walk anywhere near it. LOL

If they sold Christmas trees year around, I'd have one up constantly. LOL it's never too early for us and the Christmas tree.

Though I know some had the tradition of bringing the tree home Christmas eve, decorating it that night.

Yeah...the Kolache thing is pretty cool, cause my daughter is always ready to make them with me. Cool bonding time.

It was a great steak, a great wine and well needed.
