Dear men of the online dating world – nobody wants to see your penis.

Or, rather, nobody wants to see a picture of your erect penis suddenly appear on their Whatsapp when you’ve never so much as been on a date.

You know what’s sexier than sending a stranger a picture of your erect penis?

Sending a pic of a toaster. A cake fork. Timmy Mallet riding a unicycle.

Honestly, anything.

Of all the baffling things about online dating the unrequested dick pic has got to be the worst.

While a minority of women like them and another minority see them as a form of digital abuse (online flashing if you will) the majority of us just roll our eyes and ask ‘why, why, WHY do you continue to do this?’

Well it’s time to stop wondering, ladies. I’ve got the experts in.

The behavioural psychologist
Jo Hemmings is a psychologist and dating coach at www.johemmings.co.uk.

She says:

‘On one level it is simply exhibitionism.

‘The technology is there, so they use it to show what they’ve got to offer, assuming women will be impressed by their manhood.

‘Sexualising themselves via their erect penis is a crude “mating device”.

‘In their naiveté, they’d obviously like to see a picture of you naked, so why wouldn’t you want to see the same?

‘And it might prompt you to send one back. Unlikely, but there’s always that possibility lurking in their Neanderthal minds.

‘But it also cuts to the chase without having to explain in any words that they’re after sex rather than a relationship.

‘It’s effectively a swift route to market and there’s no confusion for the girl they are sending it to.

‘We know that men tend to lead with their dicks. What clearer way to show intent than a pic of their “best friend”?

‘And while it’s happening at an increasing rate, it’s not becoming more acceptable.

‘Most women will auto delete any guy that does send images of his dick.

‘Let’s hope that message hits home sooner rather than later.’

The sex worker
Margaret Corvid aka Mistress Magpie is a professional dominatrix, activist and writer.

She says:

‘Men send unsolicited dick pics out of a sense of sexual entitlement – they’re turned on, and they want you to know it.

‘Only with consent can dick pics be fun and horny.

‘If a guy sends them without permission it means he’s not great with boundaries.

‘If you agree to cook if he washes up he won’t do the washing up.’

The culprits
I asked men on Tinder who had sent me unrequested dick pics why they did it.

Here are some of their responses:

‘I guess I just wanted to get talking dirty.’

‘It’s a turn on. Hopefully women will send the equivalent back.’

‘I don’t know. I’m just bored I guess.’
